Enhancing Surgical Care: Urology Suite Upgrade at Benazir Bhutto Hospital
Project Overview: Upgrading Urology Surgical Suite at Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Rawalpindi
Background: The Urology Department at BBH Rawalpindi faces challenges in meeting the surgical needs of underprivileged patients due to limited capacity and long wait times. To address this, Dr. Zain el Amir and the department's faculty initiated self-funded modifications to construct an additional surgical suite with two operating rooms. Seeking financial support for essential equipment, the department aims to enhance its services for impoverished patients, who rely on this government facility as the sole provider in the district.
Operating Capacity Situation: Despite having seven consultant urologists, the department operates with only two theaters and faces constraints due to insufficient OT tables and anesthesia machines. Currently performing 150 to 175 surgeries monthly, the upgrade promises a substantial increase in surgical capacity, ensuring better service delivery.
Proposed New Surgical Suite:
- Equipment Purchased:
- OT Table: Mequett Alpha Max
- OT Lights: Trumpf iLED 5 Double Dome
- Anesthesia Machine: Astiva 5 Anesthesia Machine
Expectations and Goals of Upgradation:
- Increased Surgical Capacity: The upgrade aims to double the number of surgeries per month, from 150-175 to 300 or more, meeting the surgical needs more effectively.
- Reduced Wait Times: Patients can expect shorter wait times, reducing from years to just a few months, ensuring quicker access to necessary surgical interventions.
- Improved Access to Renal Transplantation: Enhanced facilities will enable more renal transplantation procedures, addressing a crucial healthcare need within the community.
- Monthly Reporting for Accountability: Implementation of a monthly reporting system will track improvements, ensuring transparency and continuous focus on delivering high-quality care.
